Inspector-General of Police Launches Special Intervention Squad to Counter Crime Surge in FCT

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has inaugurated a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Wednesday to address the escalating crime rate in the region.

During the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, Mr. Egbetokun highlighted that the squad comprises trained, well-equipped, and highly mobile police officers with the capability for rapid intervention and effective containment of significant security breaches.

Emphasizing the need for immediate and decisive action in the face of the alarming rise in criminal activities, the IGP expressed that the initiative was born out of foresight, diligent planning, and a commitment to enhance the existing robust security architecture of the FCT.

He stressed that the FCT serves as a model of efficient urban security management, and it is essential to proactively address potential threats.

The IGP outlined the squad’s vision, which includes a thousand personnel in each state, drawn from various tactical units of the force. The squad will be equipped with a formidable arsenal of operational assets, including sophisticated arms, drones, and vehicles, ready for deployment to counteract security threats.

This, according to the IGP, signifies the Police Force’s unwavering commitment to the safety and security of the people.

In addition to its role in dismantling criminal networks, the squad will engage in community-oriented policing, aligning with the Nigeria Police philosophy that public safety is a collaborative effort.

Mr. Egbetokun emphasized the importance of working closely with community leaders, residents, and stakeholders to strengthen the bonds between the Police Force and the communities. The overall objective is to ensure that every corner of the FCT remains a safe haven for its inhabitants.
